Ghana midfielder Christian Atsu insists he must improve form to retain starting role

Newcastle United midfielder Christian Atsu admits he must find “another Level” to retain starting role.

The 25 year old started from the bench in Newcastle United’s 1-0 win over Swansea on Sunday.

Despite a very good start to the season the winger was left on the bench by Coach Rafael Benitez who opted for Jacob Murphy over the weekend.

However Atsu who seems to have had a tightened grip of the left wing position insists he is excited by the competition for places but will have to work hard to maintain his place in the squad.

“I’m very happy that I’m playing week in, week out,” he told the chronicle.

“There’s a lot of competition in the game, so I just need to work hard and try to compete with my colleagues.

“I’m also happy for my friends on the pitch. Anytime I’m on the pitch I want the club to win. I want to do something for the club.”

Newcastle started poorly in the league this season, losing to Tottenham and Huddersfield in the opening two games of the season. The north east club did manage a morale boosting win over fellow strugglers West Ham.
