Nottingham Forest Appoint Mark Warburton as Manager on Two-and-a-Half Year Deal

Published on: 13 March 2017

Nottingham Forest have officially announced the appointment of former Brentford and Rangers boss Mark Warburton as new first-team manager.

He replaces Gary Brazil, who had been placed in charge for the rest of the season only last month after an initial caretaker stint.

Warburton has agreed a two-and-a-half year deal with Forest that promises to keep him at the City Ground until the end of the 2018/19 season.

Former Everton and Scotland centre-back David Weir, who has worked under Warburton at Brentford and Rangers since 2013, also arrives in Nottingham as assistant manager.

Warburton established a fine Football League reputation during his time with Brentford.

Having initially joined the club as a sporting director, he guided the Bees from League One to the Championship in 2013/14 and then immediately into contention for promotion into the Premier League after securing a Championship playoff berth at the first time of asking.

Last season, the 54-year-old completed Rangers' return to the Scottish Premiership by securing promotion from the second tier, five years after the club had been relegated to the basement tier of Scottish football following financial ruin.

With Forest currently 19th in the Championship, winning just one of their last seven league games, and only two points above the relegation zone, Warburton now faces a different kind of challenge.

His first game in charge of Forest will see the visit of Derby County to the City Ground this weekend in an East Midlands Derby clash. The Rams themselves also have a brand new manager after replacing Steve McClaren with former Birmingham boss Gary Rowett.
