Barcelona retain IHF Super Globe title as Al Sadd finish fourth

Doha: Barcelona defended their IHF Super Globe title when they made a strong comeback to outplay the former champions Fuchse Berlin in a thrilling final at the Al Duhail Sports Complex in Doha yesterday.

The Germans, who were looking to secure their third title, posed a threat to the three-time champions from Spain, and led from the start of yesterday’s final.

Fuchse Berlin were leading until the 14th minute, but Barca levelled the scores at six and went on to secure the lead soon.

Fuchse Berlin were not ready to give up so easily and fought back hard to equal on three occasions before the half time.

At half time, Barca led 13-12.

The second half began with Berlin levelling the score at 13 and soon at 14 before Barcelona took charge of the game.

The Catalans never looked back and went on to take the game away from the Germans as they enjoyed winning the fourth Super Globe crown in dominant manner.

Earlier, Champions League title holders Montpellier HB of France sealed the bronze medal with a commanding 33-23 victory over Qatar’s Al Sadd.

Brasil’s Taubate defeated Tunisia’s Hammamet to claim the fifth place in the final ranking with a 34-24 win.

Bahrain’s Al Najma were placed seventh following a 28-26 win over Sydney University.
