Sky Blues start with draw

Adam Le Fondre earned a share of the spoils for defending premiers Sydney FC as they opened the new season with a 1-1 draw against Adelaide United.

The new signing equalised on his debut for the Sky Blues at Coopers Stadium after Scott Galloway had put the Reds in front.

Playmaker Milos Ninkovic supplied the low cross which le Fondre converted 12 minutes from time.

Although Le Fondre and fellow off-season recruit Siem de Jong impressed at times, Steve Corica's team didn't create enough chances.

Their first shot on goal didn't arrive until five minutes before the interval and Le Fondre's leveller was their only effort on target in the second half.

Adelaide grabbed the first goal of the new campaign on the cusp of half-time with a shot that caught Sydney FC goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne too far off his line.

German midfielder Mirko Boland found Craig Goodwin and when he played it back into Galloway's path the 23-year-old sent his shot over the despairing dive of Redmayne.

Corica admitted his keeper should have done better, but said: "We all make mistakes, it's about how you respond to them afterwards, and I think we showed great character, the boys stuck together and we got a point in the end."

United lacked a cutting edge up front and will hope for better when they host the Sky Blues in the FFA Cup final at the same venue on Tuesday week.

Sydney, who are attempting to win a third consecutive Premier's Plate, will turn their attentions to the derby against Western Sydney at the SCG on Saturday.

Sydney FC are 4/6 to win the FFA Cup and 13/10 to win the final in 90 minutes, with Adelaide 21/10 and the draw 23/10.
