Cristiano Ronaldo left the pitch in tears on Wednesday night after being sent off on his Champions League debut for tugging on the hair of Valencia defender Jeison Murillo.
This is what it means for the Juventus star.
How many games will Ronaldo be banned for?
Ronaldo gets an automatic one-game Champions League ban, meaning he definitely misses Juventus' home game against Young Boys on Oct. 2.
Can UEFA extend the ban?
Yes. As stated in 50.01 of the regulations: "In case of serious offences, the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body (UCED) is entitled to augment this punishment."
UCED will meet, most likely on either Thursday or Friday of this week, to discuss all disciplinary matters arising from Matchday 1 of the Champions League and will take into account referee Felix Brych's report.
If Ronaldo's behaviour is adjudged to be overly aggressive then UCED they could ban Ronaldo for an additional one or two matches. This would mean he could miss one or both of the games against former club Manchester United on Oct. 23 and Nov. 7.
However, ESPN has been told it is unlikely that Ronaldo will receive any extended ban on top of the automatic one-game suspension.
Can Juventus appeal against the red card?
No. Ronaldo will now miss the Young Boys game regardless. There is no right of appeal against "an automatic one-match suspension following a dismissal" in UEFA competitions as shown in regulation 61.1.c.
However, if UCED does give Ronaldo any additional games then Juve could appeal against that portion of the suspension. They will have three days to lodge the appeal after the decision is handed down.
When will we find out how long Ronaldo is banned for?
UEFA will instigate disciplinary proceedings against players after UCED meets this week. It will then be several days before UCED decides on any additional punishment for players who are charged.
Any appeal against additional suspensions will be heard before Matchday 3 on Oct. 23.
