The away goals rule was first introduced in the now-defunct European Cup Winners' Cup in 1965, using away goals to determine the outcome of a tie if the scores are level after two legs. However, a number of managers including Jose Mourinho, Unai Emery and Carlo Ancelotti have expressed their opposition to the rule, and UEFA are now in discussions to see if it should be scrapped in continental competitions.
