Aspire Zone hosts Canada’s women boxing team camp

Doha: Aspire Zone Foundation (AZF) welcomed Canada’s national women’s boxing team in preparation for the Women’s World Boxing Championship 2018, scheduled to begin on November 15 in New Delhi, India.

The travelling party was comprised of six female fighters and coaches who have travelled to Doha to undertake a comprehensive training programme, with their sights set on a podium finish at the Championships.

During the training camp – which runs until the November 11 – the team will take full advantage of the facilities and expertise on offer at AZF which has become the preferred destination for large numbers of international teams competing in a wide range of sports.

Assistant Coach Samir El Mais explained the objectives of the training camp at Aspire and said: “We’ve travelled here from Canada to help acclimatise to the heat and adjust to different time zones. This marks the final stage of our preparations for the World Championship and we’re very impressed by the world-class facilities and expertise that Aspire has to offer athletes.”

“Training and preparation is critical for any boxer ahead of a fight, to sharpen their skills and ensure maximum fitness. And with a comprehensive, week-long training programme mapped out for us here at Aspire, we really do have everything we need,” he added.

Canadian national women’s team boxer Sabrina Aubin commented: “From my point of view, training here in Qatar is the ideal choice. We have all the elements that we need to focus our attention on the upcoming tournament. Our presence in Doha will enable us to adapt to the differences in temperature and time zones so that when we are able to fight with our best performance. I’m confident that our time here this will give us the grounding and preparation we need to succeed.”

Sara Haghighat-Joo, another championship boxer also commented: “Without doubt, this is the best training facility that we’ve ever experienced together.

The facilities and infrastructure are truly world-class. I’m sure our week here will provide us with a massive boost, and we’ve also received a fantastically warm welcome from our hosts.”

During their stay, the Canadian national boxing team will benefit from an intensive programme that integrates strength training, traction stretches, fight practice and cardio workouts in Aspire Park.

Hosting training camps for national teams is a key component in fulfilling Aspire Zone Foundation’s vision, which is to be the Reference in Sports Excellence World-wide by 2020.
