Burnley mental strength delights Dyche

Published on: 10 February 2019

Sean Dyche says Burnley have rediscovered their identity after extending their unbeaten Premier League run to seven matches with Saturday's win at Brighton.

Having finished seventh last season, qualifying for the Europa League in the process, it looked like being a very different campaign for the Clarets after a dreadful start left them in the relegation zone.

However, since the turn of the year, Dyche's men have taken 15 points from a possible 21 and are now three points clear of the relegation zone after getting the better of Brighton.

They are level on points with the Seagulls after a brace from Chris Wood and an Ashley Barnes penalty saw them to a 3-1 win at the Amex Stadium.

Burnley are now 10/3 to be relegated, while Brighton are 8/1 after a five-match winless run in the league.

Having not lost in the league since Boxing Day, Dyche says his team are showing some of the characteristics that played a part in their seventh-place finish last term and is hopeful of pulling away from the relegation zone in the coming weeks.

"Pleased with seven unbeaten in the Premier League, it's another historical marker for these players," said Dyche.

"Mostly pleased for the mentality of the group because there have been heavy questions this year, a different kind of season.

"Still more to come but lots of questions, lots of confusion, lots of odd things, lots of differences, lots of new challenges and culminating in a tough day on Boxing Day when we had to realign. They (the players) take massive credit for that.

"It just floods back in very quickly, no-one can put their finger on it.

"When it goes you can smell it coming back again, it's a strange thing. After West Ham (a 2-0 win on December 30) you could feel it coming back again into the group."

The Clarets could find it tough to extend their unbeaten run to eight matches when they face Tottenham in their next Premier League game on 23rd February.

Burnley are 19/4 for the win on home soil, while Spurs are 11/20 and the draw 3/1.
