"The important thing is to have won – we were aware how difficult the match would be," Gennaro Gattuso said as he gave his thoughts on his team’s victory over Samp on Sunday afternoon.
"It really wasn’t easy today to recover all our energy after the match against Real Sociedad," he continued.
The coach added: "We knew we’d have to dig in but we stepped things up nicely in the second half. In the first period we deserved to be behind – we were not able to express ourselves and in some moments we made individual mistakes.
"Mistakes can happen in a game. Some players played poorly but that's understandable. The key is to recover, not to stand there complaining and react as we did today.
"Samp are well organised. Ranieri is a very experienced coach and he put us in difficulty today. It was a test of character and fight – this win is also significant from a mental viewpoint."
