Ten-man Real Madrid dropped to fifth place in La Liga after a 2-0 home defeat to Real Sociedad on Sunday.

Santiago Solari's side fell behind after just three minutes and were forced to play a man down for the final half-hour as they fell one point off fourth-placed Alaves with the result.

Sociedad were awarded a penalty seconds into the match after Casemiro, scrambling to cover for a giveaway down the left, fouled Mikel Merino inside the box. Willian Jose then calmly converted from the spot to give the visitors a surprising early lead.

The road back was further complicated for Los Blancos when Lucas Vazquez was shown a second yellow card in the 61st minute for a careless challenge from behind on Merino in midfield.

Playing with 10 men, Madrid worked a handful of chances led by the lively Vinicius Junior, but could not find the breakthrough against the visitors before Ruben Pardo secured the points with Sociedad's second seven minutes from time.

The loss leaves Real on 30 points from 18 matches, while Sociedad move into a three-way tie for 11th with 22 points.
