Seventh edition of Workers’ Cup kicks off in grand style

The seventh edition of Workers’ Cup, the annual football tournament organised by the Qatar Stars League (QSL) and sponsored by Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC), kicked off on Friday, 7th December, 2018.

A total of 28 teams, equally divided into seven groups, are competing this year. Matches are played on Fridays at the Al Sadd Stadium.

The final is scheduled for 25th January, 2019.

The tournament’s main objective is to promote a culture of sport and healthy lifestyle in the community of migrant workers engaged in various projects across the State of Qatar, especially those related to the infrastructure of 2022 FIFA World Cup.

In Group A, defending champions Nakheel Landscapes began their campaign with a narrow 2-1 win over Black Cat.

In the other match in Group A, Siraj Ahammed scored five times as Youth Club came up with a near-flawless performance to see off DicoTech Qatar 6-0. Tarik Maati also got on the scoresheet.

In Group B, Medgulf Construction pulled off a 4-2 win over Trags & Agency Services, while CRC Dora and Trags Engineering played out an entertaining 2-2 draw.

The Group C action saw Larsen & Toubro cruise to a 6-1 win over HBK Contracting and Galfar Al Misnad and Spartan Ready Mix share the spoils after battling to a 0-0 draw.

In Group D, Prince Martey and Williams Akolgo each netted a hat-trick as Doha Pest Control notched up a thumping 8-0 win over CCC, while Delta Doha Corp rode on a brace from Tripen Rai to prevail over NAAAS Group by a 2-1 margin.

Group E witnessed victories by five-goal margins. Hamis Bukenya Kitagenda scored all goals as Mowasalat downed Aktor 5-0, while Shapoorji Pallonji got their campaign under way with a 5-0 victory over Teyseer Services.

In Group F, Group 4 Security emerged as 1-0 winners against Teyseer Security and Petroserv registered a 6-1 win over AG Middle East. Petroserv were powered by Victor Awine’s hat-trick.

Group G action saw Power International strike a dramatic late equaliser to hold Al Asmakh FM 1-1.

It was followed by Taleb Group’s 15-0 win over Boom Construction in what was the highest victory margin in the opening week.

Sodiq Olalekan Kolapo, Franklin Gyawae and Isaac Ameyaw all scored a hat-trick for Taleb Group.
