U.S. midfielder Weston McKennie sidelined with 'badly bruised' thigh - Schalke

Weston McKennie chats with ESPN about the future of the USMNT, why he's happy he bypassed MLS for the Bundesliga and more. A Mexico red card helped turn the tide in the United States' favor, as Tyler Adams' first international goal stood up as the winner in Nashville.

United States midfielder Weston McKennie will be out "until further notice" after he was injured in Saturday's 2-0 defeat to Bayern Munich, his club Schalke have said.

McKennie, 20, had to be helped off the pitch after receiving an unintentional kick in the leg from James Rodriguez as he won possession from the Colombian.

After a free kick was awarded for the challenge, McKennie was unable to continue and was replaced by Nabil Bentaleb in the 54th minute.

"His lower left thigh is badly bruised and there has been some internal bleeding," Schalke wrote on Twitter.

McKennie, who has made six appearances for the U.S., missed Schalke's defeat to Borussia Monchengladbach last weekend after returning from international duty with a bruised knee.

The U.S. face Colmbia in Miami on Oct. 12 and Peru in Connecticut on Oct. 17 in their next two friendlies.
