Kuala Lumpur: The Hong Kong Football Association confirmed in a statement on Tuesday that Gary White has resigned as the head coach of the national team.

White assumed the position in September and was tasked with the men’s senior and Under-23 squads.

In international friendlies in October, Hong Kong lost 1-0 against Thailand and drew 1-1 with Indonesia.

He led Hong Kong to the 2019 EAFF E1 Championship after taking top spot in the second preliminary round.

“The Hong Kong Football Association regrets to announce that Mr Gary White has resigned from his position as head coach of the men’s senior team.

“Gary has led the men’s senior team to the EAFF E-1 Football Championship Finals in December 2019 and has been very professional in the short time he has been at the Association. His efforts have been noticed and he has been given the opportunity to join a club in Japan as head coach.”

White has spent the previous six and a half years in Asia. He was the head coach of Guam for four years from 2012 to 2016, followed by a six-month stint at China League One side Shanghai Shenxin.

After parting ways with the Chinese club, White was appointed the head coach and technical director of Chinese Taipei Football Association a year ago.
