The QNB Stars League Week 15 was noted for more reasons than one. A total of 23 goals, compared to Week 14’s 19 goals, were scored across the six matches.

Al Rayyan recorded the highest-margin victory, 6-0 against Al Kharaitiyat.

Al Sadd (35 points) further cut the gap with leaders Al Duhail (36) to just one point after the former defeated Al Shahania 4-1 and the latter were held 1-1 by Qatar SC.

An own goal by Al Kharaitiyat’s Ali Fayez started it all in the first minute of their match against Al Rayyan. Sebastian Soria, Lucca Borges (two goals), Rodrigo Tabata and Jonathan Menendez were on target for Al Rayyan.

Qatar international Hassan Al Haydous and ace Algerian striker Baghdad Bounedjah each contributed a brace for Al Sadd, while Luciano Vazquez gave Al Shahania’s reply.

In the process, Bounedjah took his personal tally to 28 goals to become the Qatar league’s all-time top scorer in a single season. He surpassed Brazilian striker Clemerson Soares’ record of 27 goals set in the 2007-08 season for Al Gharafa.

Osama Omari and Murad Naji were on target for Qatar SC and Al Duhail respectively. The Red Knights thus continued to be the only unbeaten team in the tournament so far this season.

Al Duhail and Al Sadd are now equal on the number of victories (11).

The first five positions in the QNB Stars League standings remained unchanged. Al Ahli had opened the week’s action in grand style by defeating Al Gharafa 3-1.

In other fixtures, Al Sailiya defeated Al Khor 2-1 and Al Arabi blanked Umm Salal 3-0.

Mohammed Muntari, Abdelrehman Mustafa and Nigel de Jong scored the goals for Al Ahli, whereas Amro Seraj found the mark for Al Gharafa.

Star Moroccan striker Rachid Tiberkanine struck two goals for Al Sailiya before Al Khor found a consolation penalty goal through Wagner Ferreira.

For Al Arabi, Fahad Al Balooshi twice and Mohammed Salah El Neel once were on target against Umm Salal.

Al Arabi jumped to the sixth position with their seventh victory as Umm Salal crashed to their sixth defeat.

Al Ahli thus extended their unbeaten run to eight matches (six victories and two draws). Milan Macala’s side has 26 points, while Al Sailiya and Al Rayyan are on 28 and 27 points respectively.

Al Kharaitiyat’s misery compounded following their loss to Al Rayyan.
